Sleeve Notes

Since my first recording with the Emmettones in 1959 I have made albums with a number of fine musicians from Scotland, Ireland and England This my first chance to record with some of the great musicians who have become my friends since I started touring in Germany 20 years ago.

GÖTZ ALSMANN, who play banjo and mandolin, I first met when he was 14 years old at Münster folk club

MARTIN HANNENMANN, (a founder-member of "Fidel Michel") who plays keyboards, has been a friend and fellow curry addict for even longer.

PHILIP SHACKLETON, who co-produced the album and sings backing vocals, I first met in his native Lancashire when he was 15 years old. He has been in Germany for some years now.

GERRY SPOONERR on dobro is originally from Wales but has been living in Germany for many years. He works as a musician and singer.

VOLKER WILMKING (piano, flutes and whistle) Volker is not only my agent in Germany and co-producer of this album, but a fantastic musician in his own right.

I can't thank them enough for their friendship and very considerable help.

I chose to record Live at Ferdi's Pizza Pinte in Bielefeld because it has become my home-from-home when I am on the Continent. Dietmar, Fips and Ferdi, who has been one of my best friends for 20 years, made it possible for me to play to an audience of friends, some of whom have been, like me, coming to the Pizza. Pinte since it first opened 17 years ago. Thanks to all the people who travelled from Denmark and Hamburg and Frankfurt, and points between, to be in on the fun.

Special thanks to MURIEL GRAVES who sings backing vocals, who has been a close friend for more years than either of us care to remember and my constant companion and partner for the past few years.
