Sleeve Notes
The best musicians make better music than they know. They lead us beyond what they’ve done before. And the best of all — like the Chieftains — are so unstoppably alive that they lead us beyond even what they desire. They make music that wafts in from mystery. And then that mystery joins us together.
We get our voice from the voices of others. The Chieftains sat down, way back in 1962, and listened to the past and brought it into the present. It flowed through our ears and entered our memories and said something essential about us all. They were intense and bold and exhilarating and roguish and unpredictably playful. Even back then they contained the principles of indestructibility. What the Chieftains were saying from the very get-go was that music couldn’t afford to lose its delight. They were the lads in the comer snug, but the music was spilling out the window, down the street, onto the ferry, into the highway, beyond the airport, out past the stars.
None of us are around for very long, they seemed to say, so we might as well try to be here forever.
So the Chieftains invited others into their snug. From London. From Africa. From Ireland. From America. They created a virtual hearth. The beauty of it was that the hearth wasn’t digital: it was human. Full of humility, ardour, grace. And soon all these voices came together — and continue to come together — to split the musical quark.
The Chieftains have passed the web of their songs, again and again, through the web of so many lives. Fifty yean. It deserves to be said again: fifty years. When you go backwards and forwards, it sounds like forever.
