Sleeve Notes
More and more these days the world seems to be catching on to the incredible music coming out of Canada. But as these talented players take their rightful place on the international stage it gives me no small amount of joy to know that the "Kitchen Party" is still alive and well. And it was in the spirit of these very same wild and unpredictable sessions, not so far removed from our own Irish "hooleys," that this album was conceived. My colleagues and I had the good fortune to spend ten very pleasant days in Halifax, and though there were no plans to make a Chieftains record as such, everyone managed to find a bit of music to pitch in with the "proverbial" kitchen sink.
Places like Cape Breton, Newfoundland, Quebec, and even tiny Lakefield, Ontario continue to turn out a whole new generation of players, ready to knock traditional music on its head and make it spin. Even now I can only begin to scratch the surface of this delightfully unique and seemingly endless pool of talent. Everywhere we went, I'm happy to say, the traditions were alive and thriving … and like all great traditions, well on their way to the future.
