Sleeve Notes
In March 1991, I was asked by UTV to stage two concerts at The Grand Opera House, Belfast, with the idea of capturing The Chieftains at their best — live in concert — for an album and a full-length video programme. To make the shows really special we asked Nanci Griffith and Roger Daltrey to join us on stage and two dancers under the direction of Christopher Bruce. We are all delighted to have both Nanci and Roger on these recordings, both brilliant talents and great fun to work with. The dance sequence is one example of the different performing arts that The Chieftains and myself regularly delve into. This year alone has seen us perform "Sgt. Early’s Dream" with The Cincinnati Ballet; team up with The Boston Pops under conductor John Williams (symphony orchestra concerts are a regular feature of our touring programme) ; and continue our work for films and television which began with "Barry Lyndon" and includes "Saturday Night Live".
"Ambitious" was one word used to describe this project, but with a little help from our friends and guests and some hectic rehearsals, we pulled it off with smiles all round. Every Chieftains concert is an event and each one is always different. Each member of the Chieftains thrives on playing live and has a chance to step out in concert. We’ve played all points East and West — China, Japan, Australia, Europe, Canada, USA included — and the diary is full for the next two years. We look forward to seeing you on the night, but for now it’s all captured here — don’t stay home without it!
