Sleeve Notes

Aiden Forde was born in county Galway, Ireland. But grew up in Birmingham, where from an early age he took an interest in the wealth and diversity of musical styles on offer in this multi-cultural city.

Most of Aiden's family are musical and play and sing both in and out of the Irish tradition so he had plenty of opportunity and encouragement to practise both singing and playing instruments at home.

In 1979 Aiden joined up with Ian Campbell's folk group in Birmingham as a singer, guitarist and fiddler and toured extensively with them between 1979 and 1984 playing at major folk festivals throughout Europe, Scandinavia and Canada. A couple of Ian's songs are featured on this album.

In recent years Aiden has become a mature student at Birmingham University reading history but has continued playing locally and when he has the time further afield.

This recording is a selection of some of Aiden's favourite material both traditional and contemporary. Included are his own "Sands of Sudan" and "wear on earth", both of which reflect a concern for the social issues of the day.

The accompanying musicians are all friends of Aiden 's from Birmingham with whom he has played over the years, the longest standing being his erstwhile partner and old school friend,

Neil Cox with whom he still plays regularly, the album finishes off with Aiden's favourite folk ballad "Carrickfergus".

I would like to thank all the musicians who gave their time and talents in the making of this album. To Neil, Ian, Ralph, Christine. Ted, Lizzy, Chris and especially Mick & Keith for all their hard work in the production room. Also thanks to Corrie for making the tea.

Thanks again to everyone
