The music in "Gangs of New York" combines archive recordings from the record collections of Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson, live recordings from the filming, orchestral score, and a few new songs. It's a combination of the various participants musical life's journey in a story which it naturally fits into. When looking at it seperate from the film, it's astounding to see that there are 86 pieces of music in "Gangs of New York" a collection that seems to contain the entire history of music and could in itself be its own anthology. Othar Turner and The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, The Beijing Opera, Roanan Browne, The Chieftains. The Silver Leaf Quartet, Maura O'Connor, Shu Dee, Hukwe Zaose. Jocelyn Pook, Peter Gabriel, Johann Sebastian Bach, Howard Shore, Davy Spillane, The Sacred Harp Singers, Johnny Kalsi, U2, F.W. Rauch, Sonny Terry, Linda Thompson, Nathan Frazer and Frank Patterson are just some of the artists whose music appears in the film.

In a perfect world you would have all 86 tracks in your hands right now … maybe someday … but in the meantime Robbie Robertson, Martin Scorsese, Howard Shore and myself have bantered back and forth a bit and have come up with this musical journey from "Gangs of New York."

I'll be seeing you …
Hal Willner
