Sleeve Notes

From first to last, HOOTENANNY SPECIAL is a doozer of an album! Robust and vigorous, rousing and varied, it reflects one of the happiest wonders of the present-day musical scene.

A back-to-grassroots phenomenon that's blowing across the country with almost gale force, this enthusiasm often takes the form of casual get-togethers, or hootenannies, featuring folk dancing and group singing. This record is fairly bursting with top solo artists or groups performing well-known and not-so-familiar folk music.

The New Christy Minstrels perform the lusty Californio and a rollicking tribute to a traditional Mississippi River denizen, the Rovin' Gambler.

The Brothers Four sing San Francisco Bay Blues and the popular gospel song, Michael Row the Boat Ashore.

Pete Seeger, one of the most widely traveled and beloved folk singers, recounts the sad but strangely inspiring tale of John Henry and describes what could happen if you Follow the Drinkin' Gourd.

The Village Stompers, an energetic, talented group named after New York City's Greenwich Village, perform the hard-hitting If I had a Hammer and the pleasantly pastoral Green, Green.

The Clancy Brothers With Tommy Makem, four Irish lads with a bit of the ould sod in their infectious style, tell memorable stories-in-song about Brennan on the Moor and Reilly's Daughter.

Bob Dylan, dynamic young balladeer from Minnesota, accompanies himself singing Don't Think Twice, It's All Right and House of the Rising Sun.

Remember: there's no law saying you can't join in singing along with HOOTENANNY SPECIAL!
